Let us now see why tea can be added to your skincare routine.

From your kitchen to your skincare

Apart from being an energizing drink made for refreshment, tea has other benefits that give reasons to love it. One of them is, yes you guessed it right, skincare benefits!

There is a long list of benefits you can get from drinking tea. Trouble with sleep? Drink tea. It curbs insomnia. Stressed? Drink tea. Having throat pain? Drink tea.

It gives a lot of convenience in just a cup. No wonder it has been used for skincare since ages! Going back a few thousand years, we can see China as the first to discover tea that was mainly used for medicinal purposes.

To get tea benefits for your skin, you can either drink it directly  or apply it topically.

Recent study shows that green tea has a range of therapeutic properties. These include the following properties:

  • antioxidant
  • anti- inflammatory
  • anti- diabetic
  • anti -myocardial function

Being anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in nature, tea helps treat acne and oily skin. Due to its low lipid levels, it is effective in reducing the excess secretion of sebum on the skin (which is the main cause of acne).

All the buzz about green tea promoting anti-aging skin is, in fact, true. A study has explained how drinking green tea helps the skin look youthful, in addition to improving its elasticity (this is the sign to grab your green tea packet!). About 24% of the women have claimed that tea has helped their skin against sun damage.

Types of tea you can choose for your skincare (besides your evening break)

Aah! The famous green tea!

No wonder green tea is the most popular tea worldwide. The innumerable benefits it provides has pushed it to this prestigious position (no offense to the other types of tea!).

The origin of this wonder drink goes to ancient China. The story goes that a king there drank a cup of water that had a leaf fallen into it. Boom, the magic drink was created and spread quickly around the world.

Green tea contains catechin that's responsible for its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It is the best tea for your skin, especially if you are are acne-prone or sensitive. It also controls overactive androgens, which produce serum. This is why gel creams with green tea as their ingredient are recommended.  Applying green tea topically can heal premature wrinkles and fine lines too.

Have you heard of purple tea?

Purple tea is that underrated tea no one talks about. It comes from the same plant as the black and green tea. It's a new variety of the Camellia Sinensis plant that is native to Southeast Asia.

Purple tea is rich in anthocyanins that have  antioxidant properties. This ingredient in purple tea is also found in blueberries and raspberries which gives them the unique color! You can say goodbye to aging skin with a cup of purple tea in your hand! It is mainly known for preventing  cellular aging. Night creams containing these are a ‘go to’ for smooth skin along with its lavender fragrance.

Next, Chamomile tea,

Tea in skincare is turning popular with chamomile tea being the talk of the town! Almost every influencer talks about this tea and its benefits. That drinking a cup of camomile tea at night gives a good sleep (since it calms our nerves) is what we already know. But did you know it is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs found by mankind? Chamomile is golden for skin. Ancient Egyptians used it as a healing medicine. Chamomile finds its origin from a Asteraceae plant, which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also helpful in treating wounds and locking skin moisture.

Last, but not the least, tea tree

You might wonder how this could fall under the categories of tea. In fact, it can't even be consumed like other types of tea. But let me tell you, this is very much a part of the tea family. Extracted from an Australian plant called Melaleuca alternifolia,

its oil can be applied on the skin to treat acne. The antibacterial properties it has calms the skin, reduces inflammation and fights bacteria.

These are some of the tea options you can choose for your skin. Anything consumed within a limit is good for your body. Consuming directly is the best way. If not, use creams that have these ingredients. Apart from this practice, a regular skin care regimen using good quality products can prevent skin issues.

Speaking of good quality skincare products, the Unbottle skintelligent® range of products comes to my mind.
